4 Questions To Ask Before Buying A Mask
The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed our lives and wearing a face mask has become so normal that we don’t think twice about it. Companies have popped up left and right with all types of masks and more are now trying to differentiate based on fashion appeal. With so many options in the market how can you choose?
Well, we have some suggested questions that you may want to consider when choosing the only barrier between your airways and bacteria and viruses. Here are 4 questions you should ask when choosing a mask – spoiler alert, fashion isn’t one of them:
1.Does the mask offer virus and bacteria deactivation?
Fully covering your nose and mouth should be a given. But what if your mask could do more than that? What if it had a technology so powerful that it deactivated bacteria and viruses on the surface of fabric. Deactivated viruses and bacteria lose their ability to infect.
Why is this so important – well, just think about how you go about your day and how many times you’re touching your mask. The behavior that we’ve observed has shown that people are constantly adjusting the mask, pulling it up or down, stashing in their pocket only to reuse later; and not properly caring for it by following washing instructions. If your mask isn’t working behind the scenes to reduce the viral risk, then you should know that there is a much better option available.
Livinguard Technology is proven to deactivate 99.9% of SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19. Scientific testing done by independent academic laboratories show:
- 99.9% deactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by researchers at Freie Universität Berlin
- 99.5% deactivation of Human Coronavirus 229E by researchers at the University of Arizona
See the testing reports for yourself.
2.Does the mask meet and/or exceed the recommended guidelines?
If you’ve been out and about and seen those flimsy blue masks with gaping air pockets on the side and wondered – how is that protecting anyone, then you’re not alone. In fact, the CDC and others have advised against any mask that doesn’t do the following:
- Provide a tight/snug seal around the face
- Bendable nose wire to prevent air from leaking out of the top of the mask
- Completely cover your nose and mouth
- Two or more layers of washable and breathable fabric
Livinguard facemasks are designed to exceed mask fit guidelines while also providing a comfortable wearing experience – that’s a win/win. Our masks are designed to fit the contours of the face and are offered in multiple sizes, which creates the best initial fit possible. Next, we added fully adjustable ear loops and bendable nose bridge to make a good seal on the face. The multi-layer tight-weave cotton fabric provides silky smooth comfort that offers added protection while maintaining good breathability.
3.How clean is a mask?
A clean mask is a healthier mask, so being able to wash it ultimately provides better protection for you. The U.S. health leaders recommend washing your mask daily, which is important to do to remove infectious bacteria and viruses. We wanted to better understand if consumers were following washing guidelines, so we commissioned and unbiased third party consumer study.
The results were both eye-opening and concerning:
- Nearly 7 in 10 Americans say they reuse single-use disposable masks
- More than 50% do not regularly wash their cloth masks regularly
Another consideration regarding mask hygiene is that bacteria can be very resilient on textile surfaces and can remain even after normal household laundering. At this point you may be asking how you can ensure your mask is clean – enter Livinguard Technology.
As mentioned before, Livinguard Technology is working continuously to deactivate viruses and bacteria on the mask. This results in a mask that is more hygienically clean and one that aligns with natural human mask-wearing behavior. If you’re not following guidelines to a T, or concerned with having a hygienically clean mask even with regular laundering, then Livinguard offers the solution.
4.Is the mask reusable and economical?
An under-reported impact of COVID-19 is that billions of disposable PPE are entering landfills and waterways each and every month. You may have even seen this impact in your own neighborhoods as masks, both disposable and cloth, are littering streets and yards. This problem calls for better masks that last longer
All Livinguard masks are designed with the environment and personal economics in mind. Our daily use masks can be worn for 210 days at a price of around 12cents per day. Our ultra-breathable workout mask can be worn for 150 days at around 17cents per day. Compared to other cloth masks that wear down quickly or disposable masks, those cost savings will add up quickly.
So, the next time you’re thinking about purchasing a new facemask you should ask these important questions. The answers may have you replacing all your masks as they’re likely not up to hygienic standards and not providing the protection you thought.
